Here is my favourite poem in the English language. Using AltaVista I found many pages devoted to this poem. Does anyone remember the 1968 movie by the same title ? It was directed by the late Lindsay Anderson and filmed at Cheltenham College. Anderson was an Old Cheltonian, and so am I. When 'If...' was being filmed I was at the Junior School. I remember hearing the machine guns rattle and wondering what was going on over the road in "the big school"! Oddly, our paths crossed again when he played the Master of Caius College (whose family name was also Anderson !) in 'Chariots of Fire'.
Edward Adrian Wilson (mentioned in this list) died with Robert Falcon Scott near the South Pole in 1912. He grew up at The Crippetts farm near Cheltenham, attended Cheltenham College and then Caius College, which has a great medical tradition. I followed in his footsteps (as far as Cambridge anyway !) , so I feel a special bond with him.
In my first year in Caius I was given a scholar's privileges, and requested a 'traditional' room in the Old Courts. The Dean graciously permitted me to occupy the Senate House Leap turret room in the Waterhouse Building which dwarfs Tree Court. I never myself attempted the notorious leap from the turret to the Senate House, but I have never taken life too seriously since then. ;-)
"Tuttle's Titles": the 1996 historical and political titles from Tuttle are here. The language titles are here.
Jeremy Morley's homepage is here. He is my second cousin. Also Steve Fylypchuk's HPage. AFAIK Steve is totally unrelated to me. But there might be some Ruxtons out there who are distant relatives.
How about a quick pint at The Flying Horse on your way to Canterbury ? Or would you prefer to go to Canterbury in New Zealand ? Or how about browsing some Canterbury Tales ? Or the page of the Archbishop of Canterbury ? After that you might need the Knowhere guide to the UK.
For three years I lived in this street.
